Who runs this site
Tried and Typed is an independent, personal blog. It is hosted on WordPress.com, a service operated by Automattic Inc., which means Automattic processes some data on the site’s behalf as its hosting provider. If you have a question about anything on this page, use the contact page.
What this site collects
Traffic statistics
WordPress.com records basic, aggregated statistics for every visit: the pages viewed, the site or search engine that referred you, your country, your browser and device type, and an approximate location derived from your IP address. This is used for one purpose only — to see which posts are actually useful to people. It is not used to build a profile of you, and it is not sold.
Comments
If you leave a comment, the site stores the name and email address you enter, your optional website address, your IP address, and your browser string. This is used to publish the comment and to filter spam. Your email address is never published on the site and is never sold or shared for marketing. If you use a Gravatar-linked email address, your avatar image may be shown next to your comment.
Email subscriptions
If you subscribe to new posts, WordPress.com stores your email address so it can send them to you. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes your address from the list.
Messages you send
If you write through the contact form, the details you enter are emailed to the site owner and kept only as long as needed to answer you.
Cookies
This site uses cookies for a few narrow jobs: remembering your details if you leave a comment, keeping you logged in if you have a WordPress.com account, and counting visits for the statistics described above. If advertising is enabled in future (see below), advertising cookies would be added to that list. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time; the site will still work, though comment fields will stop remembering you.
Advertising
Tried and Typed does not currently display third-party advertising. If and when ads are enabled, they will be served by a third-party ad network such as WordAds or Google AdSense. Those vendors, including Google, use cookies and similar identifiers to serve ads based on your previous visits to this and other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on those visits.
You can opt out of personalised advertising from Google at any time through Google My Ad Center, and from many other vendors at optout.aboutads.info or youronlinechoices.eu. This page will be updated before any ads go live.
Affiliate links
Some posts may contain affiliate links, including Amazon Associates links. If you buy something through one, this site may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Affiliate links are disclosed in the posts that use them, and they never change a verdict: a product that disappointed gets written up as a disappointment.
Links to other sites
Posts link out to other websites, tools, and documentation. Once you follow a link, you are on someone else’s site under someone else’s privacy policy, and this one no longer applies.
Your rights
If you are in the EU, EEA, or UK, you have the right to ask what personal data this site holds about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to object to how it is used, and to receive a copy of it. If you are in California or another state with comparable rules, you have similar rights, including the right not to have personal information sold — which this site does not do.
To exercise any of these, write through the contact page and say what you would like done. You also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority; in the Netherlands, that is the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
How long data is kept
Comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely so that conversation threads stay readable, unless you ask for yours to be removed. Subscriber email addresses are kept until you unsubscribe. Aggregated traffic statistics are retained by WordPress.com as part of the site’s stats history.
Children
This site is not directed at children, and it does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has submitted information here, get in touch and it will be deleted.
Changes to this policy
This policy will change as the site does — most likely when advertising or affiliate programmes are switched on. The date at the top always reflects the current version, and material changes will be noted in a post.
